About – Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the largest faculty at the University of Melbourne in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, development teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students (including advanced research degrees) and conducting basic and applied research.
About the role
The successful incumbent will oversee the Centre’s academic programs specific to Indigenous doctoral students within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. You will contribute to the development of academic pathways for Indigenous doctoral students by developing and delivering a series of program activities specific to Indigenous doctoral advancement.
In a typical week at work, you can:
- Provide high-level support and guidance to the Pocket Center Director to lead the Faculty’s Indigenous graduate research programs
- Identification of funding sources to support individual or collaborative projects related to the practice of research in the discipline
- Develop, deliver, and maintain a program of graduate research masters courses, writing retreats, and other scholarly activities that develop and enhance Indigenous health scholarship and leadership
- Collaborate effectively with external networks to foster effective partnerships, locally, nationally and internationally
You will have experience presenting research findings at conferences or other forums. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills with the ability to foster effective working relationships within the faculty, the university and with external national and international organizations. You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge, understanding and respect for the different needs, aspirations and cultures of Indigenous societies. You will bring your excellent negotiation skills to achieve results on complex issues and create alliances in institutional environments such as the University.
Ideally, you will also have:
- A postgraduate degree in a relevant field of study and relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
- Demonstrated experience in planning and developing academic programs that will increase academic opportunities and support for Indigenous research graduate students
- A demonstrated high level of initiative and creativity in the development of new programs
- Well-developed professional organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate workflow, determine priorities, plan tasks to meet deadlines, and effectively balance competing demands in a complex, high-pressure environment
