Spring Admission for the Starter Company Plus Program

Cornwall, Ontario – The Starter Company PLUS program is once again open for applications.

The Starter Company PLUS program is open to residents of Cornwall, Akwesasne and SD&G aged 18 and over. The program provides successful applicants with unparalleled assistance in starting, expanding or purchasing an existing small business. This help comes in the form of training webinars, business skills development, mentorship by local business leaders, and ultimately potential access to capital.

“Understanding how to go from a business concept to launching a successful business is the main focus of the Starter Company PLUS program,” said Shauna Baggs, Business Advisor at Cornwall Business Enterprise Centre. “CBEC staff work with participants to help develop important knowledge and skills to ensure entrepreneurs have the tools they need to build and maintain a successful business. Through our partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, we are able to financially assist eligible participants with a possible micro-grant of up to $4,500.

Applications will be accepted from April 1 to April 15, 2022 and can be viewed online on the Cornwall Business Enterprise website.

Prospective entrepreneurs are encouraged to visit the CBEC website for an overview of the Starter Company PLUS program and to access the online application. CBEC staff will work with approved contractors to schedule the necessary training and ultimately create a business plan, start-up budget and 2-year financial forecast.

Eligible entrepreneurs are those starting their own business, buying an existing business or expanding their existing business. For a business expansion to be eligible for a grant, a new line of services/products must be clearly identified – ideally including the hiring of staff. Upon completion of the training, the candidate is invited to present their business plan and financial forecast to a grant panel to be eligible for a micro-grant of up to $4,500. No funding will be provided to participants during the training module.

The Starter Company program was launched in 2014 to support young entrepreneurs, then relaunched in 2017 as Starter Company PLUS – opening the program up to a much wider demographic. Since its inception, the Cornwall Business Enterprise Center has worked with over 200 participants and helped distribute over $550,000 in micro-grants to local entrepreneurs across the region.
